The EQ2 app serves as a real-time support and coaching tool for staff working with trauma-affected youth in residential care, juvenile justice settings, or other out-of-home placements. Given the complexities of these environments, staff often face challenges such as secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and high turnover rates, especially among those with personal trauma histories or insufficient training and supervision. The application incorporates a variety of tools aimed at enhancing the knowledge, skills, and resilience of professionals engaged in youth care.

One key feature is the daily emotional check-in, designed to increase staff awareness of their mood and stress levels. Depending on the emotional valence of responses, the app delivers tailored feedback intended to support staff in achieving greater emotional regulation before interacting with youth. This feature also underscores the contagious nature of emotions and highlights how staff emotional expression influences their colleagues, the youth they serve, and the overall emotional climate within their organization. Additionally, staff can select weekly work-related goals rooted in research-backed behaviors that promote the social and emotional well-being of trauma-exposed youth. The app generates practical tips, strategies, and learning resources aligned with these goals, which are monitored throughout the week, with feedback provided based on self-reported progress. Users may also set daily intentions centered on qualities that foster positive relationships with youth. Each day concludes with an inspirational quote emphasizing core themes from the EQ2 curriculum, designed to motivate and prepare staff for their upcoming shifts.

The Practice Section offers an extensive array of guided visualizations, mindfulness meditations, and relaxation exercises tailored both to address the specific stresses associated with trauma-informed work and to support general stress reduction and self-care. Evidence suggests that mindfulness practices can improve individuals' capacity to manage high-stress environments effectively, thereby reducing burnout and secondary trauma. These features also provide supervisory support by offering practical scaffolding for introducing mindfulness into team routines.

The Learn Section hosts instructional videos aligned with each of the six modules of the EQ2 program. Topics include effective emotion coaching; understanding trauma's effects on youth neurobiology; building reparative relationships; strategies for crisis prevention; and approaches to relationship repair with both youth and colleagues. The animated videos reinforce essential self-regulation skills and include four targeted videos designed for staff to view with youth, aimed at teaching core concepts and skills from Lionheart’s evidence-based Power Source program.

Furthermore, the EQ2 app functions as a resource for delivering structured supervision to direct care staff. The animated coaching videos can be utilized during group or individual supervisory sessions or assigned as homework to reinforce learning outside formal meetings. The platform also facilitates onboarding new team members by providing accessible education on essential skills and professional qualities. Its on-demand availability allows staff to learn at their own pace and revisit content as necessary. Users can mark particularly helpful materials as "favorites," enabling personalized curation of resources that best support their developmental needs.
